Time Marches On But Cookies Are Forever

Eleven. My twins are now eleven. How on earth did that happen? It seems like just yesterday they were popping on princess dresses and asking to bake cookies with me.

I have enjoyed every age with them, but sometimes I’d love the chance to relive special moments. As I sit in my home office, rain pelting the trees outside, I can’t help but think back to a few winters ago when all my daughters wanted to do was bake…

Wind howled at the sparkling window panes as spirals of fallen leaves leaped up in a December dance. Sliding open our back French door, I could almost smell the promise of snow.

A little hand slipped into mine. Without glancing down, I knew my daughter’s keen eyes searched the yard. No bunnies. All summer long, she and her twin sister had been amazed by the small creatures. As the days grew shorter, our little hares had sought shelter.

I had wondered if, like me, the wee rabbits were ready for a new year. During the prior months, my family had moved from New York City to a small town in Connecticut. My courageous twin daughters had fearlessly forged ahead. They started an unfamiliar school, made new friends and adjusted to country living.

“Mommy,” my daughter’s small voice had whispered. “Cookies?”

“Sure, let’s go find your sister and make some.”

As I glided the door shut, sheltering us from the increasing chill, she proclaimed, “I love you more than cookie dough.”

Considering how much she adores the sticky substance, I was really quite pleased.

Even though my daughters are now tweens, whenever I take out ingredients to make cookies, one or both still show up to help. Yes, we don’t do it quite as often due to homework and extracurricular activities, but it just makes the times we do even more special.
