Tears stung my eyes as my husband drove our family away from New York City. It was moving day, in the middle of the pandemic and we were headed to our new house in Connecticut. Although I knew this day was coming, nothing could prepare me for the reality of it. Never had I lived anywhere other than New York City. I grew up in Manhattan’s West Village and even stayed in the city for college so I could attend a major New York fashion design school. After marrying my husband in The Big Apple, we welcomed our twin daughters to the city that never sleeps. So this new venture was, quite frankly, a bit scary. Change…some people love it, others not so much. I hate to admit I am in the latter category.
As we settled into our new residence, busy unpacking, my young daughters explored their very own backyard. After initially screaming fearfully about bugs, my former urbanite children decided that there might just be fairies living in the bushes. Both girls implored me to provide lodging for the little pixies. Scattered around our yard, hidden behind flowers, one can now find diminutive dwellings for the wee folk to rest their weary heads.
Navigating our way though the next couple of years was an adventure. We slowly adjusted to living in a house rather than an apartment. The absence of yellow cabs to take us around town took some getting used to. The kids made new friends, but did I need some too? Living in the same place all my life had provided me with consistent pals. But this was unfamiliar territory. Should I perhaps try to really get to know some of the local gals? Time slipped by, our house became a home and my children transformed into second graders.
Lately, as I watch my daughters giggle with potential forever besties my Mom guilt over uprooting them dissipates. I love preparing tea party playdates for this fun crew. Sometimes I’ll even serve them treats, such as enchanting Angel Kisses, on my good china. Secretly, I wish decades from now my children will still consider a handful of these lovely little ladies some of their dearest confidants. I wonder if perhaps the new friends I’ve made might like to pop over for tea as well!
