Carefully, she poured make believe tea into a miniature cup. Satisfied her favorite stuffed animal would enjoy the tea party she had prepared, my five-year-old daughter skipped off to find her twin.
As she searched, a pink flash through the rooms, I heard her calling out sweetly. Soon she found her sister, who was sitting amongst a pile of doll clothing. Kneeling down beside her, she picked up a brand new Barbie. My daughters turned five last week and although we didn’t have a soirée with actual guests, the day was full of celebration.
Six months ago I wouldn’t have paired parities with social distancing. But now it’s the new normal.
The big day started with a festive breakfast. It included presents from one of my closest friends, who FaceTimed with us to share the experience. Over the course of the day, my twins received calls from many well wishers. Everyone used FaceTime, Skype or Zoom to interact with my children.
It was a school day, so my kids got to see their classmates virtually. These thoughtful children made beautiful cards for both girls. In a true New York City moment, a dear friend of mine made a gorgeous birthday sign for my daughters, and stood outside our apartment building where we could see her through a window. One of the highlights of my daughters’ day was Skyping with their cousins. I had sent my brother the same cute paper plates, napkins and cups I would have, so it was like his children and mine were eating cupcakes in a kids party together.
Although it’s not how I envisioned their birthday, it turned out quite magical! Perhaps you’d like to plan a virtual gala as well!
