May usually arrives in a confusion of blooms and afternoon downpours. It is one of the months notorious for the exchange of vows and bejeweled bands. Although never a spring bride, I had the uninvited arrival of torrential showers on my wedding day, causing guests to run for cover in my midsummer night’s dreamscape. I love a good rainstorm, but everything certainly got soggy. Instead, for me, May symbolizes new beginnings in a different but extremely tangible form. It was the month my twin daughters were born.
Over the past four years their personalities have blossomed. It awes me how much sense of self these little girls have. Yes, they are sweet, but it is their sass that makes me beam. Not when they act up, mind you, but when they use it to stand up for themselves or a friend. They do come from a long line of spunky women after all!
Fairytales are a big part of our daily life. However, as much as we all adore Princess Aurora, I like to add a little modernity into the magical mix. The idea of lounging around on a bed of thorny roses for a hundred years makes me cringe and, truth be told, I’d be bored to tears after five minutes. Not to mention, if Prince Phillip traipsed through the forest to deliver a wake-up smooch to this romantic without at least picking me some wildflowers, I’d probably deck him! In our home, the tiara wearing fairy queens are also veterinarians, who administer first aid to all the wounded woodland creatures. Cinderella proudly tops off her frothy outfit with a scarlet pre-preschool graduation cap and satin-clad Belle builds her own castle out of LEGO.
I can’t even imagine all the things I’ll experience with these two over the years. But, I’m sure with a couple of strong willed gals it will never be dull! 🌸🧚🏻♀️💕🦋🌷
