A Sparkly Silver Lining

Giggling, my four-year-old twin daughters held stuffed animals up to my computer. Smiling back at them from the screen, their teacher asked what the various toys’ names were. It was morning meeting and show and tell was in full swing.

For over a month now this has been our new normal. Instead of rushing out the door to school, we hurriedly get ready to log onto Google Meet. In this virtual classroom the girls get to see their teachers and friends. The chorus of cheers is uplifting as each new attendee joins.

Every day there is a lesson plan. Honestly, even though I’m enjoying this time with my children, it’s exhausting. I have little time for myself. However, in the midst of all this upheaval, I realized something. By doing the assignments with my kids, I’m learning new things about them!

My children used to go to preschool during the week. When it was time to pick them up, I’d ask about their day. My daughters would tell me what they did and who they played with. But, I didn’t fully know how each twin processed new information in an academic setting.

It’s very interesting to see how they go about each scholastic task, and which ones they find more exciting. When this is all over and they’re back in school, I’ll have gained something wonderful.

Yesterday’s science experiment was amazing! We investigated how rain works using shaving cream, food coloring and water. Later on, we created shapes out of marshmallows and straws for math concepts. We can’t eat the edible projects, but I always make my kids a fun treat. One day I made brownies topped with sparkly whipped cream. Perhaps you too might like to head back to the classroom just for afternoon snack!
