Passing Down the Ballet Slippers

As I watched my young twin daughters practice trying to balance on their toes, I just had to capture the moment. Their teacher was being very patient and both girls were giving it their all. Sure each was wobbly, but they certainly were determined to succeed.

I remember my first years of dance. A handful of friends from my preschool would join me at a quaint New York City studio set up in a brownstone. Situated on a quiet tree-lined street in the city’s West Village, it was a magical place for a class of mini ballerinas. The recitals for our cozy group were sweet and fanciful.

When I aged out of this charming class, I started at the much more serious Joffrey Ballet School. The no-nonsense Manhattan chapter was much more rigorous. A couple of times a week, decked out in head to toe pink, I joined my fellow classmates as we honed our skills.

The first day my twins took ballet, a lump formed in my throat. My daughters had become third generation dancers, as my mother had taken dance as well. More stumbling around then graceful twirling, they gave it their best foot forward. As a mother, that’s all I’ve ever wanted for them, to feel confident enough to just try something.

After each class I make them fruit infused water as a treat. This past week they enjoyed a raspberry cucumber combination, yum! Please see below for the recipe if you’d like to give it a try. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it as much as my little ballerinas did!

Raspberry Cucumber Infused Water

Ingredients
1 medium size cucumber
1/2 cup fresh raspberries

First slice half a medium cucumber, and place in a two quart pitcher. Then add 1/2 cup fresh raspberries. Now fill with water. Lastly, refrigerate for at least two hours before serving.

If you plan on having some later, be sure not to keep fruit and veggies in the water for more than 12 hours.
