Covered with glistening pale pink seed beads, oval shaped with a long shoulder strap. Well, perhaps it wasn’t so lengthy, but just felt that way because I was seven. My first real purse! A hand-me-down from one of my grandmothers for dress up. So fancy!
What is it about a fabulous handbag that makes me do the happy dance? Not just a fashion accessory, it is almost a statement of who I am at a particular moment. One year I was all about leopard print. What did that say about me? Well, I was starting a new fashion line and probably wanted to feel fierce. Another year I only coveted Kate Spade bags. Why? Hmmm, let’s see…I was working long hours and odds were I needed something with pockets for fabric swatches!
Now that I am a mom, my go to bag is a Longchamp tote. It’s amazing how much stuff can be packed into it! Besides my own necessities, my kids require a staggering amount of accessories. I’m one of many modern women who won’t leave their home without an oversized handbag. But there was a time when ladies carried little bags instead of ones the size of a small suitcase.
I would love to carry a cute little purse around, but what would I get rid of? Can I really live without my mini umbrella, make-up bag, cell phone, three pairs of sunglasses, wallet, various notepads, six chapsticks for my two daughters and a couple of sweaters? Oh, and my keys!
My mom carries around little candies in her handbag for energy. I thought it would be fun to dress up little bon bons with fabric and ribbon for my bag. If you like the ones in the photo, the how-to is below.
You’ll see in this photo the lovely little white beaded bag my mom knitted me for my wedding. Are you a fan of smaller bags this size for everyday? Or, perhaps you are more like me and can’t seem to leave anything at home!
Fabric Wrapped Bon Bons
For each candy you will need:
1.) 5″x5″ fabric square, all edges cut with pinking shears (sawtooth blade)
2.) 1/4″ wide ribbon, length depends on how long you want your bow
3.) mini flowers
First roll each candy in a fabric square. Then tie both ends with ribbon. Now, while tying the bows, tuck in the little flowers. Lastly, cut each end of the ribbon on the diagonal with a regular scissors. This will keep it from unraveling.
