Little hands flipped small square cards over two at a time. No match. A second pair of small hands reached for cards to turn over. My young twin daughters were playing a memory game. Who would find a pair of matching cards first?
Being a twin can mean having a best friend for life. Yes, my kids disagree at times, but they also get to have a constant playmate. As they‘ve gotten older, I have noticed a shift in my hectic mommy life. Of course it is still very busy around here, but I have a little more time to breathe.
The day my husband and I brought our twin babies home from the hospital, I was happy but a bit overwhelmed. Suddenly I went from not having children to tending multiple infants around the clock. When a friend who was also a fashion designer swung by, I warned her in advance not to expect me to be in a miniskirt and high heel boots. In those days I was just happy to have on a clean shirt!
Even though sleep deprived, I loved those months when my kids were infants. But now that they’re a bit older, things are wonderful in a different way. We have what I call “big girl adventures.” On one such outing, I took them to New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, where we played observational games. Looking at intricate tapestries, we explained to each other what we noticed first on each one. Visiting the Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Crèche, my girls chose favorite angels. In the sculpture gallery they told me what they thought of the various chiseled forms’ body language.
“This looks like a mermaid, it must be Ariel!” My strawberry blonde four-year-old stated.
“I think this one is a fashion lady!” Her fair haired sister mused looking at a dramatically posed carving.
Listening their ideas is one of my favorite things. Sometimes we have girl talk while sipping my special Sweet Rose Milk. I can’t wait to find out what opinions they will have in the future!
Sweet Rose Milk
Ingredients
2 cups milk
2 tablespoons rosebud tea
2 teaspoons honey
First rinse the rosebuds for 30 seconds to remove any dust. Then place them into two tea infusers. Next warm the milk in a small pot on the stove. Pour the milk into two teacups. Now place the rosebud filled infusers into the cups and let steep for about 10 minutes. Lastly remove the infusers and stir a teaspoon of honey into each cup.
