A dab of perfume, a puff of powder and a swipe of lipstick. My mother was getting ready for a night out while looking into her large antique mirror. I must have been about six. As she curled her hair I thought how fun it would be to get so dolled up.
My mom would always let me sniff her perfume bottle before applying its contents to her wrists. Now that I have young daughters, they love to watch as I apply eyeshadow, mascara and lipgloss in the morning. My twins requested to be fancy as well, so I bought them fruit flavored lip balm, which they apply with exuberance.
What is it about the act of getting ready for each day that is so magical? We all choose what part of ourselves we show to the world by how we decide to dress and accessorize. For some people, this becomes quite the art form.
There are many vintage movies, old photographs and romantic paintings that depict glamorous gals primping at dressing tables. The nostalgia of slowing things down a bit in a hectic world for a little self pampering appeals to me. Although I’d love to lounge around in a dressing gown like a starlet from the Golden Age of Hollywood, it’s not very practical. But I make time to sip my morning tea and look though my clothing to select who I’ll be each day, a sort of grown up version of dress up.
I look forward to expressing myself with each visit to my closet. Some days I’m in mom mode wearing leggings and a cute tunic. Other days I’ll choose a fun short dress and feminine flats. Or perhaps I will want to wear an outfit showcasing an ethereal floaty skirt.
My daughters are now at an age where they want to pick out their own outfits. I find it interesting to see what they will choose. Perhaps someday one of them will have a daughter that will watch as she applies makeup!
Hope you pamper yourself a little today! đź’ť
