Little plates and tiny cups glittered in the warm lamplight. Golden dollie placemats showed each young tea party participant where to sit. Dressed to the nines as fairytale princesses, all the little girls took their seats. It was quite the fashion show of ruffled dresses, sparkly tiaras and glitzy jewelry. My four-year-old twin daughters and their friends were ready for afternoon tea and girl talk!
My kids have always loved tea parties. Whether in our home or out and about, they are always ready to join in whatever the location. At home my girls love helping me set their petite table with miniature place settings and plenty of goodies. Dolls and stuffed animals are handed their invitations. Once all the attendees have found a seat, it is time for tea!
Cupcakes, macarons and plenty of fruit grace the table. Pink lemonade “tea” fills little cups. Favorite toy dogs seated in highchairs have treats placed in front of them. Watching them I am often reminded of the whimsical tea party scene in Lewis Carroll’s novel Alice in Wonderland.
Much like the book, my kids make up their own rules during their gatherings and silliness prevails. Fanciful hats sit atop their heads and various toy animals drink from pink floral teacups. Interestingly enough, at least one of my kids usually looks for an elusive stuffed bunny to take part in the fun. As Alice’s White Rabbit never arrives on time, my daughters’ pink and purple plush hares get the seats of honor.
Sometimes I’m invited to join, other times I’m only on tea tray duty. Either way I love watching them have a ball. It’s truly wonderful to experience the magic of childhood!
“Yes, that’s it!” said the Hatter with a sigh, “it’s always tea time.”
